Artist Statement

Creating has been a fundamental part of my life since I was a child. It was a form of expression, an avenue of adventure, a frightening place to sit with my darkest thoughts and a white cube to exhibit the most vulnerable side of myself. With my practice, creating is not limited to a studio, to the gallery, or to an object. Creating ranges from the making of food, to the making of connections, to the making of memories. Caught by the severity of the climate crisis and the shift in reality through the COVID-19 era my practice revolves around these fundamental questions; what does one create when the world doesn’t need any more “things”? How can I innate connection rather than feed isolation? And when words fail, how do we articulate our personal and collective experiences?

My artistic practice is an investigation into how we explain the inexplicable. Through abstract form and domestic handicraft I initiate a conversation of comfort and capture, playing with the dualities of desire and detest. While attempting to stray from solely producing artifacts my practice cultivates connection, joy, curiosity and excitement. With this goal I decentralize the product of the art and place the focus on the spectator. Actively working to engage the community while reimagining how we experience gallery spaces, fine art and strangers. While making art in the era of COVID, the importance of community has become abundantly clear. We do not need, nor should we attempt, to survive alone and I believe art is the greatest tool we have as we try to rebuild life post isolation.
